Section 08
The Straight-Answer FAQ.
How fast does credit repair actually work?
Dispute cycles run 30–45 days by law — the bureaus must investigate and answer. Real progress is measured in months, not days, and anyone promising a specific score jump on a schedule is selling you a story. What moves fast: utilization (one or two statement cycles). What moves slow: records — late marks, collections — which need review, dispute where inaccurate, or time.
Can I get a loan with a 500 credit score?
Usually yes — and that is exactly the trap. At 500 the approvals that come find you are priced brutally: subprime auto at 20%+ APR, payday-adjacent products, fee-loaded cards. The honest math is that a few months spent fixing the file often costs less than the interest premium on one bad loan. When you truly cannot wait, price the full cost in dollars before signing — never shop on the monthly payment alone.
Is an 800 credit score actually possible for a normal person?
Yes — roughly one in five American adults scores 800 or better, and they are not rich; they are consistent. Those files share the same fingerprint: years of on-time payments, utilization in the single digits, a real mix of accounts, old lines kept open, and very few recent applications. It is a pattern, not a secret.
What does “instant approval” really mean?
It means a computer said yes before a human ever looked. Lenders run automated underwriting: your score band, utilization, income statement, and recent inquiries hit thresholds and the decision fires in seconds. “Instant” describes the speed of the decision, never the certainty of it — and the profile that clears those thresholds can be built deliberately.
Are “guaranteed approval” loans real?
No legitimate lender guarantees approval before seeing your file — underwriting is the entire business. “Guaranteed approval” is the signature of two things: products priced so high they profit even on defaults, or fee-harvesting schemes that collect upfront and vanish. Treat the phrase itself as the warning label.
What credit score do I need for a car loan?
Almost any score can get financed — the score sets the price, not the permission. Lenders tier roughly: 780+ (super prime) sees the advertised rates, 660–779 pays a little more, 601–659 (near prime) pays meaningfully more, and below 600 the same car can cost thousands extra in interest. The score decides which of those buyers you are.
What is the fastest way to raise a credit score?
Utilization — because it has no memory. Pay revolving balances down before the statement date (not the due date) and the lower number is what gets reported. Files heavy on card balances can move meaningfully in one or two cycles. Everything else — records, age, mix — moves on longer clocks.
Does checking my own credit hurt my score?
No. Checking your own file is a soft inquiry and never touches the score. The marks that count are hard inquiries — when a lender pulls your file because you applied. Check yourself as often as you like; it is your record.
Can a company remove accurate items from my credit report?
No — and the law is blunt about it. No company, including ours, can legally remove information that is accurate, verifiable, and timely. What legitimate repair does is force the system to prove its records: inaccurate, unverifiable, or unfairly reported items get challenged and must be corrected or deleted. You also always have the right to dispute anything yourself, free, directly with the bureaus.
How long do negative items stay on a credit report?
Most negatives — late payments, collections, charge-offs — age off after seven years. Chapter 7 bankruptcy runs ten. Hard inquiries fall away after two years and stop affecting the score well before that. Every negative on your file has an expiration date, and the file heals in that order.
What is the difference between credit repair and credit education?
Repair fixes the record — disputing what is wrong on the file you have. Education fixes the pattern — how you run balances, applications, and accounts so the next file never needs repair. Repair without education relapses; education without repair leaves errors bleeding points. The system upgrade is both.
Does a lender have to tell me why I was denied?
Yes. Under the Equal Credit Opportunity Act and the Fair Credit Reporting Act, a denial must come with specific reasons — or the right to request them — plus a free copy of the credit report used, if you ask within 60 days. That letter is not a rejection slip; it is a diagnostic. Decode it and it tells you exactly what to fix.
