How Credit Repair Works. Law, Process, Truth.

Credit repair isn’t magic and it isn’t a scam — it’s a legal process with rules on every side. Here is the whole thing, plainly: what the law gives you, how the process actually runs, and what no honest company will ever promise.

The short answer

Credit repair works through your FCRA right to dispute: every item must be verifiable, and what can't be verified must come off. Accurate, timely items cannot legally be removed. You can do it yourself for free; what a professional adds is precision and persistence across all three bureaus. The 800 Club's in-house team builds and runs the case for you.

The Law

Your File, Your Rights.

The Fair Credit Reporting Act does three load-bearing things: it requires everything on your report to be accurate, verifiable, and timely; it gives you the right to dispute anything that isn’t, free, directly with the bureaus; and it puts a clock on the bureaus — generally 30 to 45 days to investigate and either verify the item or remove it. Separately, the Credit Repair Organizations Act regulates companies like ours: written contracts, cancellation rights, no charging before work is performed, and no promising specific outcomes. A company that breaks those rules is telling you who they are.

The Process

What Actually Happens, Cycle By Cycle.

Audit: pull all three bureaus — they don’t agree with each other, which is itself the first lead. Identify: flag every item that’s inaccurate, unverifiable, or unfairly reported — wrong dates, wrong balances, accounts that aren’t yours, marks past their legal expiration. Dispute: challenge each item with the bureau reporting it. Track the cycle: the bureau investigates with the furnisher and must answer within the window. Escalate: what verifies wrongly gets re-challenged with the furnisher directly, with documentation. Then the next cycle begins — repair is measured in cycles, not days.

Studies of credit-report accuracy have found that roughly one in five reports carries an error — the raw material of legitimate repair is depressingly plentiful. Reading the process is free. Running it — precisely, persistently, across all three bureaus — is the service. See it done for you →

The Truth

What Comes Off — And What Never Will.

Comes off: errors, items the furnisher can’t or won’t verify, duplicates, marks past their legal reporting window, and accounts born of identity theft. Stays on: anything accurate, verifiable, and timely — no company, including ours, can legally remove real history, and anyone who says otherwise is describing fraud. What time does: most negatives expire at seven years, Chapter 7 bankruptcy at ten, inquiries at two. Every file heals; repair accelerates the honest part of that healing.

Scam radar, one line each: guaranteed deletions · “new credit identity” / CPN offers · big fees before any work · instructions to dispute things you know are true · no written contract. Any one of these ends the conversation.

The Choice

Do It Yourself — Or Have It Done.

You can run every step above yourself, free — that right is the law, and any honest company says so up front. What done-for-you buys is the same thing hiring any professional buys: the process run with practiced precision across all three bureaus, every cycle tracked, every escalation documented, while your evenings stay yours. If your file has one wrong late mark, dispute it yourself today. If it has years of tangled history across three bureaus, that’s when the service earns its fee.

Straight Answers

Asked Constantly — Answered Once.

Is credit repair legal?

Yes — the Fair Credit Reporting Act gives you the right to dispute anything inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable, and the Credit Repair Organizations Act regulates companies that do it for you. What is illegal is promising to remove accurate information, charging before work is performed, or telling you to lie on an application.

How long does credit repair take?

Each dispute cycle runs about 30 to 45 days by law, and most files take several cycles. Simple errors can clear in one round; tangled files with items across all three bureaus take months. Anyone promising a specific score by a specific date is selling the promise, not the process.

Can credit repair remove accurate negative items?

No — and no legitimate company will claim otherwise. Accurate, verifiable, timely information stays until it ages off. What repair does is force every item to be proven: wrong balances, wrong dates, duplicates, and anything a furnisher cannot verify must be corrected or deleted, and that covers more of a damaged file than most people expect.
