Bad Credit Loans. Read The Math Before You Sign.

“Bad credit loan” is a price tag, not a product — the same money at a heavier markup. This page shows the markup in real dollars, names the traps, and lays out the smarter play when you have any room to wait.

The short answer

A bad credit loan is a markup on your credit tier: the same $10,000 over 48 months costs about $3,000 more at 24% APR than at 12%. It solves an emergency, not a credit problem, and the next loan is priced by the file you fix now. The 800 Club's in-house team works the file; the funding team brings the money.

The Real Cost

What The Markup Looks Like In Dollars.

The same $10,000 borrowed over 48 months, priced by credit tier:

APRMonthlyTotal InterestWho Pays It
6%$235$1,273Strong files (740+)
12%$263$2,640Fair files (660–739)
24%$326$5,649Subprime files
36%$396$8,997“Everyone approved” lenders

And that’s the regulated end. A typical $500 payday loan charging $75 for two weeks works out to roughly a 391% APR — a fee that resets every rollover, which is the entire business model.

The Traps

Five Patterns. Walk Away From All Five.

“Guaranteed approval.” No legitimate lender guarantees a yes before seeing your file — the phrase is the warning label. Fees before funding. Advance-fee “lenders” collect and disappear. Title loans. A triple-digit APR with your car as the hostage. Payday rollovers. Engineered so the fee renews faster than the debt retires. Payment-only pricing. Any offer quoted only as “$99 a week!” is hiding the total — always price the loan in total dollars.

The one-question filter: “What is the total number of dollars I will repay?” A lender who won’t answer that plainly has answered a different question.

If You Can’t Wait

Harm Reduction, Honestly.

Sometimes the transmission dies today. In that order of preference: credit unions — many offer payday-alternative loans (PALs) at capped rates and will look at more than the score; secured loans against savings; a co-signer who understands they’re fully on the hook; a smaller ask — borrow the repair, not the upgrade. Whatever the source: total-dollar pricing, no upfront fees, no title collateral, and a payoff plan you could say out loud without flinching.

The Smarter Play

The Highest-Yield Move Is The File Itself.

Look at the table again: the gap between the 24% row and the 12% row is about $3,000 on a $10,000 loan. If your situation gives you even a few months, money spent making the file lendable returns more than almost any investment you could put those dollars into. Utilization moves in a cycle or two. Errors and unverifiable marks can be challenged now. That’s not a pitch — it’s arithmetic.

Straight Answers

Asked Constantly — Answered Once.

Can I get a loan with a 500 credit score?

Almost certainly — that is the industry’s trick, not its favor. Approvals exist at every score; what changes is the price, and at 500 the price can double the cost of the money. Read the total-dollar figure before the approval flatters you, and compare it against a few months of fixing the file instead.

What is a reasonable interest rate for a bad credit loan?

Reputable lenders cap personal-loan APRs around 36% — the line consumer advocates and many state laws treat as the ceiling of legitimate lending. Anything priced above that, or priced in fees and factor rates instead of an APR, belongs to the predator shelf regardless of how fast it says yes.

Do bad credit loans help rebuild credit?

Only if the lender reports to the bureaus and you pay on time every month — and many of the worst products report nothing, so you pay the premium and build nothing. A secured card or a credit-builder loan does the rebuilding job at a fraction of the cost; a bad-credit loan is for a need, not a strategy.
